Who are you & what do you do?
Hi! My name is Matthew Crawley, and I do a few things. Right now, the things that are taking up the most of my time are:
a. The Golden Dawn: Tavern of Power, the new-ish bar on the corner of Richmond Road & Ponsonby Road (not far from your cute new store). I'm the Entertainment Manager there, which means I get to decide what music is playing as you eat and drink, and also invite all manner of curious folk to come along and play records, laptops, sitars, banjos and guitars. The place is going to get weirder and weirder, ideally.
b. 95bFM - I'm one of the creatives there, which means I am part of an intimidating lineage of ad writers for the station. Their ads have made me laugh since I was in high school, so to actually be writing those ads to make other people laugh is terrifying. But awesome. Mostly awesome.
On top of those two things I also have a radio show, play music (both solo and with my band the Cosbys), DJ, organise shows, and spend a lot of time playing Scrabble online with people who're smarter than me.
What gets you up in the morning?
usually a combination of two alarms. Often the two are still not enough to get me to work on time. I have only once been fired for lateness, and that was over a decade ago. I try my luck almost every day. Tip for those like me: bring French pastry with you if you are late, you will keep your job.
What inspires your work?
I genuinely don't know what else I'd be doing if I wasn't working in music. I dropped out of high school when I was sixteen to work at Georgie Pie and DJ on bFM. It was a difficult choice, but I decided to dedicate my life to music instead of pies, and it seems to have been the right choice.
But I get a huge kick out of watching Auckland get more and more exciting; it changes every year. I remember in 2002 when I first started working in and around the Auckland music scene - you wouldn't recognise it now. There's so much happening now compared to then!
What is your most exciting achievement?
Being flown to Melbourne and New York to work on a series of Nick Cave documentaries. it was pure dumb luck, and I'm sure anyone could have done what I did on them, but it was amazing working on these films about my musical hero. And getting to meet people whose music has more or less shaped my life.

The sunshine is out in Auckland and I can't help but be reminded of this classic from Bubble Boy...

W
ho are you and what do you do? I'm Jason Chong Li, I'm a senior stylist and creative director assistant at Stephen Marr.
What gets you up in the morning? My 'Sleep Cycle' on my phone! It's a great app!
What inspires your work? I take a photo on my phone of everything that catches my eye. Even something 'wrong' can inspire me. Lots of the time, inspiration comes from all the references that I have in my head, it's about how much you have seen and remembered.
What is your most exciting achievement? Hmm. I guess it has yet to happen. Everytime I achieve something I can't help but look for further challenges and I tell myself this is still the early stages and I can do more. I did just get a phone call from Wella yesterday and I have made it to the final of the Wella competition for the 3rd time. That continuity made me quite proud.
